MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Childline Mpumalanga is the first non-governmental organisation to target all children in need throughout the province of Mpumalanga.  Our vision is to prevent child abuse and protect and promote the welfare of all children throughout Mpumalanga.  It is the first service of its kind in Mpumalanga, which is predominantly a rural province in which approximately 49% of the population is comprised of children and youth, 18 years and younger.

Childline Mpumalanga was founded in August 2002 and developed under the management of LifeLine Nelspruit. It became an independent NGO in July 2005.

The challenges of independence were vast and scary but we managed to stabilize the organization and focus the service delivery through the programs we do. There currently exist several programmes to support the advancement of the organizational vision.

All the programmes that were piloted developed and are growing into valuable services to the targeted communities. Therapeutical services are in the developmental phase and the need of children for therapy is clearly visible in the demand since the limited service was launched.

The schools awareness program is running but distance and the need for transport hampers this service, as the target is mainly far, rural schools where children does not have direct access to social services but could be counselled by the Childline counsellor over the Crisisline.

The Crisisline is functioning well and received a total of 100 348 calls from throughout Mpumalanga. Childline Mpumalanga also positioned itself in taking part in various activities that allows the organisation to put the voice of children forward in events like 16 Days of Activism against women and child abuse.  The launching of satellite offices is researched to provide a safety net for children in rural communities that has limited or no access at all to services when they are in danger of facing abuse or violation of their rights.

Childline Mpumalanga covers the whole province via the toll free number that is programmed by Telkom to put all calls made to the toll free line made in Mpumalanga through to the Childline Mpumalanga office. Any child in the geographical area of Mpumalanga making a call to 0800 055 555 will get in contact with Childline Mpumalanga.

We have though found that some rural schools and the children that learns there are isolated from this service as there is no TELKOM line available and children in need have no way of crying of help. A way to deal with this need seems to be training in communities to respect the rights of children and advocating for development of basic services to rural under serviced areas in our province.
